This 5-star property is situated on a supreme hill in Baviaanskloof, Hout Bay. The main garden lends itself to an endless ocean view, surrounded by contrasting colours of vegetation and mountain peaks. Such a superb setting required a landscape to match.
I was called in to design and re-create two layers of the property. The lower, driveway garden as well as the main upper garden. My client’s wish for the upper area was to have a Kirstenbosch experience right outside of her patio.
The upper area was split into two levels- one being a rough, unshaped embankment of ‘koffie-klip’ and the lower pool level composing of large beds that surrounded the pool.
The upper level concept was based on achieving height with large fynbos species. We refreshed the structure of the embankment by constructing a series of dry-packed stone walls using existing rock. This created ideal, level, moisture-retaining platforms to showcasing plants. Rock walls were softened by using indigenous, cascading species along the edges of each terrace.
The concept for the lower, pool area envisaged a soft, waist-height landscape for the purpose of maintaining the ocean view.
Our client’s preference for organic shapes inspired a circular navigation route. The cottage-styled pavers were integrated with the landscape, creating a walkway that softly sliced through swathes of flowering grasses, pincushions, groundcovers, and small to medium shrubs of varying foliage types.
Texture contrasting was enhanced by positioning large, bold aloes species close-to and inside groups of wispy grasses.
Today, the colour-rich fynbos walkthrough offers a dreamlike, de-stressing experience that will improve your well-being with certainty, in ways unimaginable.
